What Actually Supports Long-Term Brain Health
We sell a cognitive supplement, and this page will still tell you that several free things outrank it. That is simply what the evidence shows.

1. Sleep
Memory consolidation — the process of moving information into durable storage — happens substantially during sleep. Chronic short sleep affects attention, working memory and recall more reliably than any supplement improves them.
If you are sleeping five hours a night and looking for a memory product, the supplement is not the intervention with the most to offer you.
2. Physical activity
Among the best-evidenced things for long-term cognitive health. Regular activity is associated with better cognitive ageing, and the shorter-term effects on mood, alertness and sleep quality begin within days rather than months.
It does not have to be the gym. Walking counts.
3. Managing vascular risk factors
Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. Vascular health and brain health are closely linked over decades, and these are among the most modifiable factors there are — usually with treatment that is already available to you.
4. Treating hearing loss
Frequently overlooked and genuinely important. Untreated hearing loss is associated with cognitive decline, plausibly through reduced social engagement and increased cognitive load. Hearing aids are an intervention people postpone for years.
5. Staying socially and mentally engaged
Consistently associated with better cognitive ageing. Conversation, learning, work, community — the mechanism is debated and the association is robust.
6. Treating depression and sleep apnoea
Both affect cognition significantly, both are common, and both are treatable. Depression in particular can produce memory and concentration problems severe enough to be mistaken for something more serious.
7. Diet
Dietary patterns emphasising vegetables, fish, whole grains and healthy fats are associated with better cognitive outcomes. As with most nutrition research the evidence is observational and the effects are modest, but the direction is consistent.
8. Supplements
Here, at the bottom. Some botanicals have genuine research behind them — Bacopa is the strongest example in our own formula. The effect sizes are modest, the trials are smaller, and there is nothing approaching the outcome evidence behind the items above.
Not an argument against supplements
It is an argument about order. Someone doing the first seven and adding a supplement is in a reasonable position. Someone taking a supplement instead of addressing sleep or blood pressure has chosen the weakest option available — and may feel the problem is being handled when it is not.
When to see a doctor instead
Memory changes that are progressive, that interfere with daily activities, or that worry the people around you deserve a proper assessment. Getting lost in familiar places, difficulty with familiar tasks, repeated questions, personality changes.
Many causes of memory change are treatable and some are fully reversible — thyroid disorders, B12 deficiency, medication side effects, depression, sleep apnoea. None of them is identified by taking a supplement, and delay is what consistently costs people.
